What is literacy? Literacy encompasses our ability to read and write; it starts to develop at birth when we begin to develop our language skills. Reading is a skill which involves decoding meaning from text and symbols. Writing is also a complex skill which is dependent on our ability to express `through language using text. Our literacy skills are critical in academics, at work, and in day-to-day activities in our community. Literacy skills are important at any age. For more information on literacy skills and typical language development, please visit ASHA's public education site. ABC Life Literacy also has great recommendations of quick and fun daily literacy-building activities that you can do at home.
